Most Amazing Fantasy Novels 2015-16
Hey everyone! The following books I wanted to cover individually, because each of them is so amazing, but you know how busy I have been in the past year. So, here they are, my favorite fantasy novels from 2015 to 2016!
1. Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
Leviathan trilogy is my first steampunk novel. It came out in 2009. It's based around the time of World War 1, where the world is divided into 2 schools of thought, Clankers and Darwinists. Clankers believe in merchandised war machines, kind of like Megas XSLR (guilty of seeing crazy amounts of Cartoon Network :-P), while Darwinists have genetically fabricated animals into becoming war machines. Imagine, whales and octopus flying in the air as airships. Fascinating, right? The book starts off with the war breaking out, Alex, Austria-Hungarian (Clanker) prince running away from his own people. On the side there's Deryn, a scottish girl that joins the Darwinist army, pretending to be a guy. This is, hands down, wonderful book if you're a total science and history nerd, which I confess I am.
2. Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyers
This book series is PHENOMENAL. It's set way in the future, where cyborgs are frowned upon by the society, robots as house keepers and people living on the moon, more commonly referred to as Lunars. There are 4 books in the series, each based on a fairy tale princess. Like, Cinder is Cinderella and she's a cyborg mechanic. There's a also a gory side to this book. The novel starts off with a plaque. Plaque, in the future. That totally creeped me out and kept me hooked. The story is so engaging plus Meyers is such a great writer. There is no single point where you will be disappointed or feel like there could have been more - that's my number 1 pet peeve when I'm reading a novel.
3. Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige
Welcome to the world of crazy. Where good is bad and bad is good. Remember sweet ol' Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. Well she goes back to Oz, becomes the Princess and the power is just too much for her little, villager head. Then comes Amy, no idea how. She's an outcast in her world and a heroine in Oz. It is predetermined that she will kill Dorothy and set things right. There's evil queens, bad witches gone good (or not) and talking monkeys wearing cat eye glasses. The story is gory and gruesome and just wonderful. You will never know what's gonna happen next.
4. Penryn & The End of Days by Susan Ee
Just look at that beautiful cover! Susan Ee published Penryn & The End of Days online as an independent book series. But it became so famous that Amazon actually published it. It's set in a post-apocalyptic California. The angels have attacked the world and whatever people left are hiding and trying to survive. 18 year-old Penryn's in-charge of her schizophrenic (and might I add, hilarious) mom and 7 year-old handicapped sister, Paige All that she's trying to do is stay safe but as her sister gets abducted by some angels, she gets caught up in the angel politics and the on-going human/angel war as she tries to save her sister. In that process she gets separated from her mom, kidnaps an angel and treats him like a hunting dog (falls for him later on) and joins an anti-angel force. This is one bizarre and totally amazing book series and Susan Ee is just a terrific writer. There's no sign of any upcoming books by her. Sad. It's not confirmed but a move is in order.
